Create an EQ Preset in Davinci Resolve

The EQ (equalizer) in Davinci Resolve Fairlight is a powerful tool that can really improve the quality of your audio. Creating EQ presets help speed up your workflow and allow you to save your settings so you can use them later. Saving an EQ preset is not obvious in Davinci Resolve, but in this video I’ll show you how easy it is. Lets speed up your workflow and save some EQ presets!

How to EQ Vocals in Davinci Reslove Fairlight - Enhance Audio Quality

Audio quality in your videos is more important than video quality. Without good audio, a video will not keep anyone’s attention. In this video, I’m going to show you how to use the equalizer (EQ) in Davinci Resolve’s Fairlight tab to enhance and process your audio. A few tweaks to the EQ and your audio will be sounding great.

Here’s a few tips to keep in mind when EQing a vocal track:

1.) Generally, cut frequencies before you boost them.

2.) Add a High Pass Filter - set it around 100Hz give or take some to remove the low end bass. You don’t need it for a talking vocal.

3.) Add a Low Pass filter around 14K Hz if the track is just talking and not signing. This removed the very high pitches frequencies.

4.) Use one EQ point with a high ‘Q’ factor to sweep the frequencies, listening for anything that sounds bad. Start in the 1kHz to 2kHz range, give or take some. Find the bad frequency, then cut that frequency.

5.) Cut frequencies between 200Hz and 600Hz if the audio is muddy sounding.

6.) Boost Frequencies above 5kHz for more clarity and presence.

You should be on your way to great sounding audio!

A quick summary of what you can find in various frequency ranges:

0 - 100 Hz: Rumbling/Bass (CUT)

100Hz - 350Hz: Unwanted Boominess, Muffled, Boxy (CUT)

600Hz - 1kHz: Boxy, Muffled (CUT)

1kHz - 4.5kHz: Nasal, Honky, Harshness (CUT)

5kHz - 7kHz: Clarity (slight BOOST)

8kHz - 10kHz: Presence, Air, Breathiness (slight BOOST)

15kHZ - 20kHZ: Air (CUT or slight BOOST)
