Aperture & F-Stops Explained

Are you looking to get the nice out of focus, blurry background in your images?  Do you need more light for a proper exposure?  Adjusting your aperture will make that possible.  Understanding Aperture and F-Stops will help you take your creativity and photography to the next level.  In this video I’ll explain what F-stops are, how they work and when to use the different F-stops.

I will also show you example images as well as give you a specific way you can practice changing your aperture while allowing the camera to choose your shutter speed.  As you learn how to use the aperture, you will gain an additional skill that brings you one step closer to understanding the exposure triangle, using manual mode on your camera and taking amazing pictures.

Here are some key things to remember about Aperture and F-stops:

  • Aperture controls two things, the amount of light that passes through the lens and Depth of Field
  • Lower apertures, for example 2.8, allow more light to pass thought the lens.  They also allow for a shallower depth of field, giving you the ability to achieve that nice blurry background.
  • Depth of Field (DOF) is simply the area that is in focus within the photograph.
  • High apertures (8 and higher) allow for more or all of your image to be in focus.
  • Higher Apertures also allow LESS light through the lens

Photograpy for Beginners: Understanding ISO through Practice

Learning to understand the exposure triangle basics will help you start out on the right foot in photography.  Once you understand the basic concepts, the only way to get better is to practice.  In my last video ISO Basics, I suggested that you can use the ‘P’ mode on your DSLR Camera to practice using just the ISO.  In this video, I’ll show you the images I made using that method and show you how noise and grain creep into an image as you get into higher ISO settings.

Here are some things to remember about ISO

  • ISO is the sensitivity of the image sensor to light
  • Lower ISO’s (100, 200, 400) are going to give you a cleaner image.  Less Noise/Grain
  • Use low ISO’s in bright environments
  • Higher ISO’s 1600+ are going to have more noise/grain.  Not always a bad thing!
  • Higher ISO’s allow you to photograph in darker situations
  • Higher ISO’s will allow you to use a faster shutter speed (we will get into shutter speed in a future video)

Understanding ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed will help you move out of the Auto mode on your camera and into Manual mode.  The benefit to you - Being able to unlock your creativity in photography.

It takes a lot of practice to master photography and your camera.  Getting a good basic understanding of the exposure triangle will give you the tools and knowledge you need to set off on a successful path in photography.

What Kind of External Storage Do You Use?

I’ve been using a 2nd Generation 4-bay Drobo for a number of years now and I’m looking to upgrade to a newer, faster and larger storage system.  What do you use for external storage and do you like it?

I am leaning towards going with another Drobo since I’ve got all the hard drives already and I’ve never had a problem with my current Drobo.  I’m currently using a mid 2015 Macbook Pro as my primary machine.

I'm intersted to hear some input from others.  Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment below if you do!
